Philosophy

Since the public schools of Louisiana are expected to adhere to democratic principles, the philosophy of education for Lafourche Parish must also serve democratic purposes.

Democracy is concerned with the individual’s living as a part of the group. It is based on the principle that man realizes his optimum development by sharing in the larger life of the group. It embraces the thesis of the dignity and of the unique value of each individual personality. It subscribes to Emerson’s dictum that “all men are capable of living by reason.” It resolves the inevitable conflicts that arise between the individual and the group by increasing the scope of their common interests. In a school system which is based on a democratic philosophy of education, the whole problem of meeting individual differences can be solved by answering the following questions:

  1. What is best for the child concerned?
  2. What is best for the social group to which the child belongs?

Basic Information

Located in South Louisiana, Lafourche (pronounced la-FOOSH) Parish Public Schools serve about 15,000 students in 30 schools, with approximately 2,300 employees.

Lafourche Parish, southwest of New Orleans along the banks of Bayou Lafourche, is a part of Acadiana, or French Louisiana, home of the Cajun people. The Cajuns trace their ancestry to the French-speaking Acadians who migrated from Acadie (now Nova Scotia) in the mid-18th century. Bayou Lafourche, and therefore the parish, get their names from the Cajun French "La Fourche" meaning "fork" used to describe how the bayou was once a descending fork of the Mississippi River.

CAJUN ('ka:-j@n)n. A person born or living along the bayous, marshes and prairies of south Louisiana; devoted to gumbo, etouffee, fricassee, sauce piquante, jambalaya, and crawfish; dedicated to the fais-do-do, Cajun French music, hard work and letting the good times roll (laissez les bons temps rouler!).

Lafourche Parish spans about 1,000 square miles of area and has an estimated population of 88,000. Major industries include seafood production, offshore oil and gas drilling and services, shipbuilding and repair, and sugar cane farming and milling. Thibodaux, the parish seat, has an estimated population of 15,000 and is home to Nicholls State University.
